A cognate is a word related in meaning and form to a word in another language because the words have the same historical source. Cognates are generally easy to recognize beause they are spelled similary. English and Spanish have many cognates, and for Spanish speaking students learning new content, understanding cognates helps them make connections to what they already know.
ACTIVITY:
This week the students will list all the words they encounter while reading and feel they are cognates with Spanish.
